So you want the best ending? The events in the S-Ending are not canon. That's why this ending doesn't show in the endings list. It's a secret to everyone. Read on...
S-Ending Requirements
- Never look out the windows.
- Laura dies in the first bathroom.
- Do NOT find Anne dead. IMPORTANT!!! If you hear Anne's scream in the hallway linking the main mansion area to the west wing you have just fucked your S-Ending playthrough. In the SNES version you could hear the scream but not look out the window or find Anne's body and this would mean that Anne is alive. This is NOT the case in the PSX port. If you hear this scream she is dead.
- Encounter Mary in the armor room and run away from her.
- Check the note in the study.
- Explore the secret room, examining all notes and the corpse.
- Release the crow and rats. The rats aren't really necessary I don't think. Free them anyways. It's the nice thing to do.
- Find Lotte in the cave
- Find Dan in the cave and kill him
- Use the elevator in the caves to go to the third floor
Walkthrough
This guide starts after the intro of the game, where you would be if you use the quick start option from the main menu.
- Head left from the start, going through the door. Immediately head left in this small hallway through the next door.
- Enter the first door you see. Check the box on top of the dresser. You may get the West Wing key, you may not. It's okay if you don't. I'll tell you how to get it later. In most of my playthroughs the key has been here. Exit through the far door. Ignore any spooky shit that happens.
- Click the bottom left corner of the dresser for a perfume bottle. Release the parrot from the cage on the right. As soon as you do, start clicking on the bed with the red sheet. Jennifer will trap the parrot. Leave through the door on the right.
- You're back in the hallway. Walk left until you hear the music and go into the first door on your left.
- Click the shower curtain once you go into the bathroom and run out of the bathroom as fast as you can.
- Run left once you're out of the bathroom to the door at the end of the hall. Once you're through the door proceed forward until you can interact with the stairs. Jennifer will walk up the stairs as slow as she can (I think this is a hidden loading screen). Once you're at the top, run to the left and enter the left most door.
- Immediately enter the first door. On the left of the screen there's a box behind a China cabinet or armoire or something. Click on the box. Jennifer will struggle to get over the cabinet and her portrait will flash. Mash the panic button to get over. Scissorman will enter the room and leave.
- Once Scissorman is gone click the left box again. Then click the box in the middle of the room. Click the left box again to get black robes. Collect the rope near the middle of the room and the insecticide canister in the bottom right corner. Head out of this room back into the area with the staircase you went up.
- If you didn't get the West Wing key earlier, leave the room with the robes. Head all the way to the left in this hallway. Examine the birds nest at the top of the wall, then push the box over to the wall. Examine the bird's nest again. This will give you the West Wing key. If a bird is here, click the stick on the wall to shoo it away.
- You'll hear a phone ringing now. Go back down the stairs that Jennifer so excitedly walked up when she was in grave danger. Head left and enter the left most door, then enter the first door you can see.
- This is the kitchen. Select the insecticide (it looks sort of like a coiled hose) from your inventory and use it on the large double doored freezer in the top left corner. You'll get a key. Leave the kitchen and go back into the main area with the staircase.
- Head back upstairs and enter the first door you see.
- Sprint through this hallway so that you don't hear Anne's scream. You might want to save just in case you screw up. This scream can happen while you're running, though it is rare. Definitely save any time you deal with this hallway.
- Once you're through the hallway you're in the west wing. Head left into the taxidermy room.
- We're going to get the hutch key here. Turn the lights off and go all the way left to the other end of the room. You should see some sparkling coming from a crate against the wall. Investigate it to get a dagger. Now open the locker on the back wall. Some kind of weird zombie thing will come out. Open your inventory as soon as you can, select the dagger and use it on the zombie. You'll get the hutch key. Leave back into the hallway.
- Keep heading right through a few hallways until you reach a hole in the floor. Inspect the hole. Then inspect the board against the wall. Continue right and enter the first door you see.
- Click the top of the boxes against the wall, then the middle. Hope that it's only a cat that's shaking the crate and not Scissorman. Jennifer will move the crates aside and notice a weak plastered over wall. Click on the pipe leaning against the bookcase and Jennifer will break down the wall. Proceed through.
- Investigate everything in the room, with the corpse going last. Pause to appreciate the fact that M. Night Shyamalan just got a boner, wherever he is.
- Leave the secret room and the room where you moved the boxes and go back into the hallway. Head left through the door at the end of the hall.
- Head left again through the short hall.
- Keep heading left to the second door in this hall. If you've been running around and your health is red, you need to restore your stamina before entering this room. Wait a few seconds and see if Jennifer falls to her knees. If she doesn't go between this hallway and the previous until she does. Enter the door.
- Right behind Jennifer there is a toy box with a red doll on top. Click on the toy box beneath the red doll to get the Ritual key. One of the dolls in the room will come to life. Mash the panic button to defeat the doll. Leave through the door you came through back to the hallway, it unlocks once the doll is defeated.
- Head left through the door at the end of the hall. Head left again and enter the first door you see. You're back in the scream hallway. RUN! You should probably save, too. This is kind of a bullshit trap. What a thing to base an ending criteria on. I hope you made it. We're almost done.
- We need to figure out which room uses the golden key we collected earlier now. It's either the right most door all the way to the left on either the first or second floor. So, it's the door next to the hallway to the kitchen or room where we got the robes on the first or second floor, respsectively.
- Once you find the room...
- 1. If Ms. Mary is in the room, you turn the fuck around and you run. Go back in and examine the table in the middle for another key.
- 2. If Ms. Mary isn't in the room, examine the table and get the key. Leave the room and go back in until she appears and then run. Yeah, I don't know how she got in there either. There's one door. Horror movie shit, whatever.
- Next we need to go to the study. Whichever room wasn't the room where you got the last key is the study. When you enter the study, examine the mural. Next, examine the middle bookshelf. If Jennifer pushes the bookshelf over, examine the mural again. If she refuses to push the bookshelf over and instead complains about the cleanliness of this hellish mansion, then you're on a different path. Examine the books on the desk to learn about how time adheres whether Jennifer pushed the shelf over or not. Leave the room.
- Head back to the scream hallway. It doesn't matter if you do so on the first or second floor. The first floor is preferred. Some of the rooms we need to go to now are randomized, and they usually end up on the first floor of the west wing area for me. You know the drill by now. Save and run. If you make it through with no scream then you can finally stop worrying about this stupid trap. We aren't going to this hallway again.
- You have two objectives now that you're back in the west wing.
- 1. Find the necessary item to unlock the secret passage to the caves.
- 2. Find the hutch room and free the animals.
- The hutch room and applicable rooms for the needed item are random. You're just going to have to grind it out and check the rooms in the west wing.
- The hutch room is the room with cages along the far left wall. Once you find this room, use the key in your inventory on the cages to free rats and a crow.
- If Jennifer pushed the bookcase over: Find the music room. Click on the curtain to obtain the staff.
- If Jennifer DID NOT push the bookcase over:
- Find the library. It's pretty obvious what it looks like. Inspect the shelves until you find one with a book that mentions a statue. It seems to be the bookshelf closest to the door, but I don't want to promise that with how much random stuff is in this game.
- Make sure you're on the second floor of the west wing. Go over the plank to the area where you found the hidden room. Investigate the second statue you see for the demon statue.
- Locate the ritual room. There's a large pentagram on the floor. Investigate the center to solve some cryptic references you've been
getting. Then...
- If you got the staff, select it and place it over the vase.
- If you got the demon statue, select it and place it on the small gold pedestal on the wall.
- If you're going for all the endings we can set a save point before going down the hole to add the B-Ending to our list. Once you complete the S-Ending you can reload this save. Go to the scream hallway and hear the scream, then proceed as you would with the S-Ending. Once you get out of the elevator for the ending sequence there will be one event where you need to use the panic button.
- Head down the hole in the floor to the caves.
- Head right until you're stopped in front of the dog. Go to your inventory and use the black cloak and perfume on Jennifer. Jennifer will proceed past the dog on her own.
- Head all the way to the right past the door to find Lotte. After the scene, head into the door you passed. Door? Cave? Whatever.
- Head all the way right, passing a door once again. Keep going right until you end up in front of a giant red curtain. Click the curtain to open it.
- Jennifer will sprint to the left until her portrait starts flashing. Now it's your time to mash that panic button.
- Once the fiery death is done, head into the door that you passed. The scene that plays once you go through is normal, you didn't screw up. Head right and go into the elevator. Pick floor 3.
- Congratulations! You did it! The S-Ending!
